This Jesus Rosary is from the Fathers of the Desert and is usually prayed on a Jesus Rosary, where the prayer beads are arranged according to how many times each little section is repeated, helping us keep count; for example, say Jesus on each of the 27 beads, Jesus Christ on the next 17 beads, and so forth on next 7 beads, then 10 beads, or just praying on your fingers works too.

Saying this Jesus Rosary 10 times in a row is what some Desert Fathers practiced, although I am grateful for attention in the mind completing one time around.

Of interest is how the Jesus Rosary evolved, as it was born out of a mystical tradition and movement called hesychasm, a Greek word meaning “to keep stillness.” This prayer was particularly esteemed by the spiritual fathers of the desert as a method of opening up the heart and bringing forth the Prayer of the Heart, which eventually moved into The Jesus Rosary. The Prayer of the Heart though, is considered to be primarily the practice of “interior silence and continual prayer” and didn’t become a “formal movement of specific practices until the fourteenth century Byzantine revival of meditative prayer techniques.”

“The Prayer of the Heart is considered to be the unceasing prayer that the apostle Paul advocates in the New Testament, or The Jesus Prayer,” reports Wikipedia. The following discoveries show validation of the early practice of these prayers, as the Prayer of the Heart was found inscribed in the ruins of a cell from that period in the Egyptian desert. Also, the earliest written reference to the practice of the Prayer of the Heart may be in a text from “The Philokalia” by Abba Philimon, a Desert Father.

The Chaplet of St. Michael

The Chaplet of St. Michael is a wonderful way to honor this great Archangel along with the other nine Choirs of Angels; the Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and the Angels.  The Seraphim is believed to be the highest Choir, the most intimately united to God.  The history of the Chaplet goes back to a devout Servant of God, a Portuguese Carmelite nun, Antonia d’Astonac, who in 1851 had a vision of St. Michael.  St. Michael told Antonia to honor him by praying nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels.  St. Michael promised continual assistance to whoever would recite the Chaplet daily as well as assistance from all the holy angels during life and at death.  These blessings extend to all our relations too. Praying the chaplet daily is also believed to gradually defeat demons and grant a Pure Heart.

How to say this Chaplet:

The chaplet begins with the invocation on the medal.  Next move up to the Our Father bead nearest the central joining, skipping the last 4 beads nearest the medal for the end.  Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys after each of the nine salutations in honor of the nine Choirs of Angels as follows:

Invocation on the Medal

O God, come to my assistance.  O Lord, make haste to help me.  Glory be to the Father, etc.

First Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Seraphim, may the Lord make us worthy to burn with the fire of His perfect charity.  Amen

(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Second Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Cherubim, may the Lord grant us the grace to leave the way of sin, and follow the path of Christian perfection Amen.

(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Third Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Thrones, may the Lord infuse into our hearts, a true and sincere spirit of humility.  Amen

(1 Our Father and 3 Hail Marys)

Fourth Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Dominations, may the Lord give us the grace to govern our senses and overcome any unruly passions.  Amen

(1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys)

Fifth Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Virtues may the Lord preserve us from evil and falling into temptation.  Amen

(1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys)

Sixth Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Powers may the Lord protect our souls against the snares and temptations of the devil.  Amen

(1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys)

Seventh Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Principalities may God fill our souls with a true spirit of obedience.  Amen

(1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys)

Eighth Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Archangels may the Lord give us perseverance in faith and in all good works in order that we may attain the glory of Heaven.  Amen (1Our Father, 3 Hail Marys)

Ninth Salutation

By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of Angels may the Lord grant us to be protected by them in this mortal life and conducted hereafter to eternal glory.  Amen

(1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys)

Now go to the 4 beads, skipped earlier and pray one Our Father in honor of each of the following leading Angels, St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael and our Guardian Angel.

Then say the following invocation:

O glorious Prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor, you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue, deliver us from all evil, who turn to you with confidence and enable us by your gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus Christ, that we may be made worthy of His promises.

Prayer

Almighty and Everlasting God, Who, by an act of goodness and a merciful desire for the salvation of all men, has appointed the most glorious Archangel St. Michael, Prince of Your Church, make us worthy, we ask You to be delivered from all our enemies, that none of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be conducted by him into Your Divine Presence.  This we ask through the merits of Jesus Christ Our Lord.

Amen.  Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Thank you Dear Father for the help of all the angels, and especially thank you for St. Michael, who defends me in my daily battles.  St. Michael and his angels who defeated the dragon, the celestial force more powerful than all the combined forces of evil, please protect each brother and sister, each child, each elder, each Padrinho and Madrinha, each family, all humankind, and each church .Thank you for all the hymns received that calls and teaches me about St. Michael while in the force of the Holy Daime, so I can really know, feel and see and have a personal and life changing encounter with St. Michael and the angels.

Amen.  Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
